2013 Domaine Katsaros Valos PGI Krania

A perfumy red grown on Mt. Olympus

2013 Domaine Katsaros Valos PGI Krania

Katsaros’s 20-acre estate vineyard splays across Mt. Olympus at an elevation of 750 meters. Although the plot includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay, this wine is a varietal Xinomavro from that site, vinified in stainless steel and raised in new French barrels for nine months.

It’s highly perfumed, flowering with raspberries and strawberries and basil. Light-textured, with limited tannic structure or barrel influences save for a drizzle of balsamic. But it shines without these, a wine mostly about fruits and herbs, berries and refreshment. Pair it with young cheeses (bloomy goat or cow), crispy snacks, lean meats and poultry, mushrooms.
