2014 Dutton-Goldfield Pinot Noir Freestone Hill Vineyard Russian River Valley

Youthful and highly spiced, with high-toned purple fruits

2014 Dutton-Goldfield Pinot Noir Freestone Hill Vineyard Russian River Valley

The vineyard lies in the extreme western portion of the Petaluma Gap, and coastal fog rules the day, cooling the vines morning and night and begetting slow ripening. Winemaking was light-handed, and the results aged in French oak for 15 months, about half new.

It’s a deep purplish ruby color, quite youthful looking, and it smells purple, too—of purple flowers, blueberries, a streak of spicy macerated black raspberries. There is a strong suggestion of nutmeg, which carries forward to the palate. The texture is light and offers reasonable acidity, and here the spice weighs in again, offering black currants sprinkled with cinnamon.

It would be superlative with pulled pork or Indian-spiced pilafs.
