2015 Birichino Vin Gris California

“White petals, ripe pears, a glittery flare of acid...”

2015 Birichino Vin Gris California

Ablend of Cinsault, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Vermentino, with a portion from ancient vines. The old-vine Grenache adds concentration, the old-vine Mourvèdre adds substance, and the Cinsault—from the exceptional Bechthold Vineyard—contributes lilting sweet fruit notes. The Vermentino (a white grape, also called Rolle) adds lift.

The photo does no justice to the wine’s pretty label and even prettier color—like the pale, peachy-rose-gold of the lining of a conch. The fragrance is quiet and softly floral, suggesting white petals and ripe pears, and the body, with a sheen like smooth sateen, feels fresh-washed like just-ironed sheets. A glittery flare of acidity mid-palate delivers a shot of tart strawberry.

The ancient fruit and floral freshness conspire to make this wine feel both sage and pristine, grounded and gamine—but with a dry smile, too, like that lady in that old Italian painting.
