2013 Emeritus Vineyards Pinot Noir Pinot Hill Sonoma Coast, Sonoma County

The Pinot Hill Vineyard is cool and foggy, with winds sweeping it from the Wind Gap and Sebastopol Hills. Soils are Goldridge underlain with clay, and the site is dry-farmed, leading to small, concentrated berries. Only 500 cases of this wine were produced.

It is the color of red velvet with a limpid rim, and its fragrance conjures cherry, raspberry, and red currant. Spice, too, filters above a scent of red earth and wet clay. The body is sharp and clear, with red fruits in the high register, the shy baritone of woodsy sous-bois below. The finish is like the sharp bite of a new plum. It’s a wine that’s high-pitched and exotic, a bright chorus, like the song of red birds.
