Better With Age

Perrin
Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape
1993

Steve bought a few bottles of this wine about ten years ago and cellared it. We opened it expecting little; we'd had another bottle in the last few months, and it was good but unremarkable. This bottle was better. The nose was a bit funky, but carried notes of raisins, dark fruits, violets, and roses. The wine was light and thin on the palate, almost ephemeral, and the earlier aromas carried through into soft flavors of fruit and flowers. The finish lingered well. In all, this was a well-integrated wine, delivering a continuous experience on the palate, and was a perfect foil for pot roast made with local grass-fed Hardwick beef, tomatoes, dark stock, mushrooms, and plenty of thyme.

Price: $20 (a decade ago)
